Come along and explore the creative possibilities of clay in this relaxed and supportive Pottery Handbuilding
course. Whether you’re completely new to pottery or already have some experience, you’ll be encouraged to
develop your skills and create work at your own level.
You’ll learn and experiment with a range of handbuilding techniques, including: slab building, coil building,
pinching, press moulding using plaster moulds.
You’ll also explore different types of clay, surface textures and mark-making techniques, as well as ways to add
colour and decoration using coloured slips.
There will be opportunities to learn about glazing and finishing pottery, with at least one session dedicated to
glazing your work.
What can I make?
You can choose to work on functional things, such as cups, bowls and vases, or explore more decorative and
sculptural ideas. You’ll have the freedom to develop your own projects, with guidance and suggestions from the
tutor when needed.
Suitable for all levels, no previous pottery experience is required.
Beginners will be introduced to the basic techniques and supported as they develop confidence working with clay.
More experienced students can build on their existing skills, experiment with new techniques and take on more
individual projects.
The course is designed to be flexible, allowing everyone to work at their own pace while developing their own
creative style.
Please note: This is a hands-on course, so please wear clothing and footwear suitable for working with clay. Aprons and ceramic tools are available to use in the pottery.
Please note that this course is run over 8 sessions rather than 10, but each session is 2 and a half hours.
