Plaster basics – mouldmaking for ceramics

Start date:

16 October 2025

Start time:

18:30

During this 4 week course students will learn the basics of how to work with plaster and about different kinds of plaster moulds used for shaping clay. All plaster work made can be taken away at the end of each session.
Students will make a portable plaster batt useful for a range of clay work, e.g. for clay slab work and for wedging and recycling clay. Plaster stamp textures or name stamps will be made during one of the sessions, which can be used to print texture onto clay surfaces.
In other sessions students will make a plaster bowl or plate model that can be used as a hump mould and also use the same plaster bowl or plate model to create a press mould. Students will also make a simple slip casting mould for a small bowl or cylinder shape.
This class is suitable for all levels of experience including beginners.
*Students will be required to wear a P3 dust mask while weighing out and adding plaster to water. We have masks at the Hive, however, if you have your own mask or would like to get your own mask, you are very welcome to bring it with you to the sessions.
We have gloves and aprons at the Hive which you are welcome to use or you can bring your own.
