This course is for students of any ability. Beginner students will learn basic skills and produce their own design towards a final complete leaded panel. More experienced students will be encouraged to undertake larger more challenging complex design projects.
Beginners will initially learn stained glass making from scratch, from cutting glass through to a complete finished leaded panel. Skills will be developed in safely cutting & grinding glass, and in creating your own designs based around the constraints of the glass medium (including producing cartoons & working drawings). You will be given instruction in the safe use of tools needed in the stained glass process, and particularly the application of soldering. Completion of leaded panels will enable students to use leading cements, patinas & polishes.
Returning or more experienced students will be encouraged to refine skills in the use of tools, and to incorporate painted or etched glass work into their projects. You will also be encouraged to further your studies of secular and religious development of the art of stained glass, by appreciation of local churches and secular buildings of significance.
Please wear sensible closed footwear (not sandals) and bring a notepad, ruler and coloured pencils if you have them. You will need to purchase glass for this glass, the tutor will provide information about appropriate sources.
This course will include an invite to a trip to explore local examples of stained glass.
