Pottery – Relief wall sculpture – New Date (25/09/22)

Start date:

25 September 2022

Start time:

This course is a nice tie into the Press Mould making course, as you can use the products of that course to aid this one.

You will be making a wall piece ca. 20X20cm out of Black Vulcan clay. Then making the hanging structure on the back of the piece, then your own design in the relief whatever story you want to tell. If you don´t like what you have made you scape it off and start again.

The aim is to have a finished piece at the end of the course and ready for firing.

You will make a tile 20 x 20cm and with the shrinkage it will reduce to ca 17cm square. Depending on the size and shape of the kiln. You will learn how to prevent the tile warping and how to fix it so it can hang comfortably on a wall.

I will bring the Extruder if that might come in useful for some people.

The Theme could be:

  1. The view out of your window.
  2. Your favourite flower.
  3. Your pets etc.
  4. The rolling hills of Yorkshire.
  5. Patterns like in Persian culture.

Pottery Studio

The studio is well equipped with materials, tools and equipment and you should not need to bring any tools or materials with you. We do recommend bringing and using a small notebook to keep a record of your work and ideas. You are welcome to bring your own tools but you will not be able to keep them at Hive.

The ceramics studio has a small reference library which you can consult for inspiration and information about ceramics and ceramic decoration. We encourage students to look at a variety of sources for inspiration and information including magazines and periodicals, as well as online sources such as Pinterest and YouTube.

You will be expected to follow Health and Safety guidance whenever you use Hive’s ceramics studio.
