During the course students will learn the basics of working with plaster and about different kinds of
plaster moulds used for shaping clay. All plaster work made can be taken away at the end of the
sessions.
After learning how to make a small plaster bowl or cylinder cup shape/model, students will learn how
to use the model they have created to make a mould for slip casting ceramics. The mould will be a
simple one part drop out mould with a reservoir ring.
The course will offer an insight into the key considerations when planning and creating a mould,
including understanding how the slip cast item will be released from the mould. Students will
develop a deeper technical understanding of how plaster works and how to calculate plaster
quantities, mix, pour and shape it.
In the first session, a portable plaster batt will be made; plaster batts are useful for a range of clay
processes from slab work and wedging to clay recycling. During each exercise, students will gain
confidence working with plaster and by the end of the course be in a position to work with the
material independently.
The course is aimed at beginners and people wishing to refresh their plaster working skills. People
with any level of experience are welcome to join
Students will be required to wear a P3 dust mask while weighing out and adding plaster to water.
We have masks at the Hive, however, if you have your own mask or would like to get your own
mask, you are very welcome to bring it with you to the sessions.
We have gloves and aprons at the Hive which you are welcome to use or you can bring your own.
